The supermarket shelf went digital. Then it became a media channel. FMCG brands now play both games at once.

Online grocery has settled in across Europe. According to Rabobank’s latest sector study, online grocery revenue across European markets will keep growing structurally faster than the supermarket market as a whole, three to four times faster in a mature market like the Netherlands, where the online share is heading toward roughly 10 percent in the coming years. Physical stores, the bank concludes, will keep ceding share. NielsenIQ data points the same way: the online share of grocery revenue keeps climbing year on year, and the growth is broad, from drinks and snacks to personal care.

For FMCG brands, that alone would be reason enough to look hard at the online shelf. A missed listing or an out-of-stock in the online supermarket is no longer a rounding error. It’s a growing slice of the category, gone.

But something else is happening on that same shelf, and it changes the game more fundamentally.

The shelf became a media channel

Europe’s grocers and marketplaces, from Albert Heijn and Jumbo to Tesco, Carrefour and REWE, from bol to Amazon, have discovered that their digital shelves are advertising real estate. Sponsored products in the app, banners on the homepage, branded shelves in the category. Retail media is now one of the fastest-growing advertising markets in the world: 203.9 billion dollars globally in 2026, up 14 percent year on year, with US advertisers alone spending around 70 billion.

And Europe is just getting started. Emerce’s 2026 retail media report notes that European FMCG categories still allocate well below the global average, while the classic lower-funnel formats, sponsored products and search, are reaching a plateau at many retailers. The growth is shifting to video, branded shelves and richer formats. Translation: FMCG media budgets are moving onto the digital shelf, and the space they’re competing for is tiny. One screen. A handful of positions. Everyone in the category bidding for them.

Paid visibility without measurement is just spend

This is where it gets uncomfortable, and where the opportunity sits. When visibility on the shelf is increasingly bought, two questions become existential for every FMCG brand.

First: are you actually getting the visibility you pay for? Which banners are live, where, and how does your share of voice compare to the brands next to you? Where do you rank in retailer search, organically and paid, today, not last quarter?

Second: is the shelf behind your media ready? A sponsored position that leads to an incomplete product page, a wrong image or an out-of-stock doesn’t just waste the click. It pays for a shopper to discover that your competitor, one position down, is available and convincing. Retail media works exactly as hard as the shelf behind it.

The FMCG brand playbook

So turn it around. This is not a threat, it’s a to-do list, and every item on it is within your control.

Make sure you’re listed, in every online supermarket and marketplace in every market. Make sure you’re in stock, because grocery shoppers substitute instantly and habits form fast: lose a spot in the weekly basket and you lose it for months. Make sure your content is complete, correct and consistent, ready for the small screen where the weekly shop happens. Make sure you measure your visibility, organic and paid: your search positions, your banners, your share of voice next to the competition. And make sure every euro of retail media lands on a page that’s ready to convert it.

Seeing it is the first step

You can only manage this if you can see it, the way the consumer sees it, on every retailer, in every country, every day. That outside-in view is exactly what digital shelf analytics provides: one daily picture of your listings, availability, content, prices, search visibility and banner presence, next to your competition.

This is where digital shelf analytics and optimisation, certainly with Parker, Sitelucent’s AI assistant, makes the difference. It ensures you perform at your best on that shelf: easy to find, easy to choose, and visible where it counts. You know exactly where you stand against your competitors, you see whether your retail media investment actually shows up on the shelf, and you get every handle you need to make both your organic and your paid presence work harder.

The online supermarket is a growing slice of your category and a media channel at the same time. Win them together. Take control of your online shelf, and drive revenue.
